From Marrakech to the Sahara: Our Epic Desert Adventure with My Best Friend

Image
There’s something truly magical about getting out of the busy city of Marrakech, and deep into the heart of the country – all the way to the immense, silent Sahara Desert notorious for eating cars. My best friend and I embarked on this epic trip and with every mile we drew closer to an adventure that we will never forget. Leaving the Red City Like nearby Marrakech, it’s an assault on the senses — a riot of colours, sounds and smells, from the bustle of Jemaa el-Fnaa square to the heady spices in the markets. But as much as we cherished that city energy, we longed for something different: the quiet, infinite beauty of the desert. So one not-too-early morning, we got in the car, prepared to swap the maze of city streets for winding mountain passes and golden dunes. Over the Atlas and Meeting a Berber Elder We drove out of Marrakech through beautiful Atlas Mountains. The landscape was stunning — jagged peaks peppered with snow, roads snaking along cliff edges, valleys punctuated by s...

Desert Morocco Adventure: An Unforgettable Night in the Sahara

Magical: That is how I would describe my two-week trip to Morocco. Each minute — between the stunning landscapes to the kindness of the people to the bounty of the culture — I was left gaping in amazement and hungry for more. Yet of all the unforgettable encounters, there was one, in particular, during my Morocco Highlights tour: A Night to Remember in the Sahara Desert It was a long way to the Sahara, but it was so worth it. Having checked out the only non-Muslim allowing mosque in Casablanca and our smallgroup was continuing into the labyrinthine Medina in Fes we were on the road, south towards Midelt. Located on the high plains between the Middle and High Atlas Mountains, Midelt offered us a close-up look at Berber culture — and a welcome break halfway through our two-day drive. From there we continued on to Merzouga, a tiny remote town at the edge of the enormous Sahara Desert. Excitement was in the air. Arriving in Merzouga It was midday when we pulled up in Merzouga, having...

My Magical Day Exploring the Blue Streets of Chefchaouen

Image
I’ll never forget the day I arrived in Chefchaouen, the Blue Pearl of Morocco. Set in the Rif Mountains, this pretty town won me over immediately with its confusing warren of blue-washed streets, bustling markets and friendly locals. Walking down the narrow streets of the old town, I thought I’d stepped into a dream painted entirely in different shades of blue – from soft turquoise to deep indigo. It seemed that around every corner was another scene worthy of a photograph, and I couldn’t help but stop to take it all in. I sat down at a kitschy café and inhaled the aroma of hot mint tea, the smell of which wafted from a small, steaming metal pitcher. One of my most memorable moments was walking up to the Spanish Mosque above town. The walk was a little bit tough, but the breathtaking panoramas of Chefchaouen nestled between rolling hills and craggy mountains made every step worthwhile. Experiencing Chefchaouen was not about sightseeing, it was experiential traveling and it deeply ...
