Ready for Unforgettable Adventures in Morocco?
The Morocco of my dreams was a land of bustling markets, the smell of spices wafting through the air and an unrelenting desert, thirsty under the hot sun. But what I discovered was so much more — a travel experience that involves all of your senses and leads me to adventures I’ll never forget.
In Marrakech, The City That Never Sleeps
Since my arrival in Marrakech, I had a feeling that this trip was going to be something else. The city’s energy is electric, a pulsating cavalcade of colors, sounds and stories. Strolling through the medina, I became all but lost in the hurly-burly of souks where vendors bellowed, carpets teetered high and the air was thick with the fragrance of saffron and orange blossom.
Over the High Atlas Mountains
But it was not only the madness of the city that charmed me, it was the call of the desert.
I headed out early one morning, abandoning the palm trees and riads for narrow mountain roads that carried me across the High Atlas. The drive there was spectacular — hairpinny passes with snowcapped peaks on one side and thickly vegetated gorges on the other. I had the feeling I was stepping into another world.
Into the Sahara: Through the Golden Dunes
Then came the Sahara. It was surreal to be on a camel, riding into the dunes, but even better than a dream. The camel’s plodding gait, the vast, undulating waves of sand around me, and that sky — oh, that sky, so much bigger than anything I’d ever known. Sunset over the dunes, turning everything gold and crimson, is a moment of pure magic.
Nights Under the Stars
Night in the desert was even more amazing. Without city lights, the stars popped overhead like fireworks. I sat around the campfire with new friends, making music and sipping sweet mint tea, feeling pint-sized in the immensity of it all.
Sandboarding and 4WD Adventure
But the adventure did not end there. I attempted to sandboard some steep dunes, laughing and falling, and took an off-road 4x4 ride that jostled me along hidden valleys and far-off Berber villages. Every day was another thrill and a greater connection to the wild beauty of Morocco that was all around us.
Back in Marrakech: And History and Reflection
The return to Marrakech featured stops at ancient kasbahs and sleepy oases, yet more reminders that Morocco’s rich history is every bit as complex as its landscapes.
In hindsight, I see that this trip had been more about introspection than sightseeing. Each step, each obstacle, each stunning vista taught me to embrace the unknown and the joy of discovery.
