My Morocco in 8 Days Tour (Marrakech to the Sahara Desert)
Morocco had long been on my list: a land of vivid souks, soaring minarets, spice-laden alleyways and skies that stretch forever across the desert. When I finally decided on an 8-day Morocco tour from Marrakech to the Sahara Desert, all I did was buy tickets—I stepped into a fairytale of color, culture, and connection.
Let me take you through the high points of this extraordinary voyage.
🕌 Day 1: Welcome to Marrakech Welcome to Marrakech
When I disembarked at Marrakech Menara Airport, I was shuttled to my riad, a lovely traditional guesthouse nestled inside the labyrinth of the medina. The air was filled with the sounds of drums in the distance and the smell of mint tea, which mixed with the call to prayer.
In the evening, I wandered Jemaa el-Fnaa, where snake charmers and street-food vendors and musicians played under the light of lanterns. Morocco had already cast its spell.
🌄 Day 2: The Cultural Heart of Marrakech
The day started out with a guided tour of Marrakech’s many historic jewels: the Koutoubia Mosque, the Bahia Palace, and the serene Majorelle Garden — a lushly painted sanctuary that was formerly owned by Yves Saint Laurent.
Strolling through the souks, I stumbled across handwoven rugs, brass lanterns and more spices than I knew the name of. Pro tip: never haggle without a smile.
🏔️ Day 3: Crossing the High Atlas Mountains
We departed Marrakech early to drive across the stunning Tizi n'Tichka Pass in the High Atlas Mountains. Each turn brought new landscapes — green valleys, Berber villages, craggy cliffs.
The highlight of my day was visiting Ait Ben Haddou, a UNESCO-listed kasbah-area that looked like it was born from the desert. Then we pressed on to Ouarzazate, nicknamed the “Hollywood of Morocco.”
🌴 Day 4: Ouarzazate to Merzouga Dunes
This was the day that I had been looking forward to. We had driven through the date palm-and-ocher Draa Valley, and with Berber villages along the way, to Merzouga, the gateway to the Erg Chebbi dunes.
My first stop was just in time for a sunset camel trek and I gathered with a small group to ride through the rolling sands as the sun set the sky on fire with gold. We spent the night at a desert camp that evening, lounging on the ground and eating next to a campfire, listening to traditional music and looking at a million stars. Pure magic.
🐪 Day 5: Desert sunrise & drive to Todra Gorge
I woke before dawn to hike a dune to watch the sunrise over the Sahara — a moment of stillness that I will be hard-pressed to forget.
After breakfast, we drove to Todra Gorge, an amazing canyon with rock walls that seemingly scraped the sky. It is a rock climbers’ classic, but I was happy just to wander by the river and breathe the air.
🌊 Day 6: The Valley of Roses & Skoura Oasis
We passed through the scented Valley of Roses, which every spring turns shed petals into rose water. Our visit to the Skoura Oasis was like stepping into another world—lush palm groves, centuries-old kasbahs and secret gardens.
That evening found us at a lovely, lush guesthouse where the birds were singing around us. It was the ideal place to re-energize.
🏘️ Day 7: Return to Marrakech Via the Ounila Valley
On the way back to Marrakech, we opted for the less crowded Ounila Valley, visiting hidden Berber villages and scenic view points.
Back in the city, I wandered the medina again that night and sat down to rooftop couscous and pastilla as the sun set over the Koutoubia.
✈️ Day 8: Farewell, Morocco
It was time to say good-bye after breakfast. I boarded my plane with more than trinkets in my luggage: I brought my memories with me: the people’s smiles, the rhythms of the cities, the wide golden silence of the desert.
Final Thoughts
This 8-day Morocco tour from Marrakech to the Sahara Desert was everything I imagined and more — varied landscapes, deep cultural immersion, and once-in-a-lifetime experiences. Somehow, whether you are discovering it for the first time or returning for more, Morocco has a way of planting footprints on your heart.
If you have the opportunity at any time — go. Just go.
